Old trees are hard on concrete
Matthews has some of the best tree cover in the county and it is why so much of the concrete work here is walkways and leveling.
Roots lift slabs, and there is no way around it
A mature willow oak will lift a four inch walkway without much effort. In the older Matthews neighborhoods that is the single most common concrete problem: a front walk with a two inch step in the middle of it, a driveway edge pushed up, a patio corner rising.
The honest answer is that you cannot pour concrete that a growing root will not eventually move. What you can do is take the section out, deal with the root properly rather than just cutting it and hoping, and pour back with the joint placed where the next bit of movement can happen without stepping. Sometimes the right answer is a different path route entirely.
A trip hazard is not a cosmetic problem
Anything over about a quarter inch of vertical offset between two slabs catches a foot. On a front walk that people use in the dark, that is the whole reason to fix it.
Leveling is often the cheaper fix and it is on our Google profile. Whether it works depends on whether the slab itself is sound. Lift a cracked slab and you have a higher cracked slab.
Downtown Matthews and the older grid
The blocks around the old town center are small lots and narrow driveways, some of them poured decades ago and never touched. Access is tighter than it looks and the drives are often narrower than a modern car wants.
Widening one of those is a common job here, and it is worth doing at the same time as any replacement rather than as a second visit.

Often yes. If the slab is sound and only one section has moved, leveling it is quicker and cheaper than a replacement. If it has cracked through, replacing the section is the honest answer and we will say so.
It can, depending on how big the root is and how close to the trunk it is. That is a real consideration and it is worth talking about before anyone starts cutting. Sometimes the right answer is to move the path rather than the root.
