One city, four completely different concrete jobs
Charlotte is not one housing stock, it is four, and the concrete work is different in each. A 1950s brick ranch in east Charlotte has a narrow four inch driveway poured over whatever was there, usually cracked into panels by now. A 1990s subdivision has a wider drive that has settled at the apron where the utility trench was backfilled. A 2015 build has a driveway that is fine and a back yard with no patio in it. And a new build lot has no concrete at all yet.
Telling you which of those four you have, and what it actually needs, is most of what happens on an estimate visit. It is also why we come out and look rather than quoting off a photo.
Red clay, and why it matters here more than anywhere
The whole piedmont sits on it. Charlotte clay holds water, swells when it takes it, and shrinks back hard in an August dry spell. A slab poured on uncompacted clay is sitting on ground that changes volume with the weather.
So the base is where the money goes on a Charlotte driveway. Cut the grade, compact it, add stone where the fill is soft, and give the water somewhere to go. Skip that and the finish on top does not matter.
Permits and inspections in Mecklenburg
A footing or a foundation for an addition, a garage or an outbuilding is inspected before the pour by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. A driveway replacement in the same footprint usually is not, and a driveway that ties into a public street may need a driveway permit from the city or NCDOT depending on the road.
